Ps4 games taking long to download
March - last edited September I believe the bandwidth on consoles is provided by the console manufacturers, not EA. Message 9 of 12 77, Views. All Replies. March Same thing happened here but on Xbox One. But on the dashboard it was fully installed. Message 2 of 12 77, Views. March If you want to install big games like this faster you need the disc. Message 3 of 12 77, Views. March I bought the digital download code from gamestop so that it is just on my Xbox and so that there is no need for a disc.
Message 4 of 12 77, Views. March - last edited March Sadly the install speed is based on your download speed so the only way to increase it if you are digital is to increase your download speed. Message 5 of 12 77, Views. March I download advanced warfare in under 30 minutes and they are around the same GB to install. The PS4's copying update data process seems to have been added sometime in possibly in system update 4.
Essentially, what Sony calls "copying" appears to be an extra safe way of installing smaller-than-normal update files. As explained by Quora user Andrew Fox , the copying process seems to be a side effect of Sony sending out bandwidth-saving, small update files. If a game has a 20GB file, but only 5MB of data within it needs to be changed, Fox said, a developer can just send out that 5MB of data over the internet and let the PS4 to do the rest.
This is something that caught me out when I was expecting a patch download to be completed in seconds when in fact it took many minutes. Put simply, download speeds from your ISP are measured in megabits per seconds, whereas file sizes are measured in megabytes or gigabytes, a much larger unit of data. A bit is eight times smaller than byte, and therefore a megabit is eight times smaller than a megabyte, and a thousand times smaller still than a gigabyte.
There are megabits in a Gigabyte so this gives some idea of why large downloads can take so long. At a download speed of 50 megabits not megabytes per second we can expect to download megabits or just over a third of a gigabyte per minute.
If you have a large game of 20 gigabytes or more to download you can now see why it will take so long. A file that large will take around 1 hour to download at this speed.

However, it seems that Xbox One lets you launch a game even before some singleplayer content is ready.
I tested this with Madden 25 on Xbox One. Once the game was 'ready to start' most modes like Connected Franchise or Practice were locked off until the game was completely installed. However, after installing the same game on PS4, those modes were playable after the initial install, which took 38 seconds.
We tested Assassin's Creed IV on two different Xbox Ones, and had the same issue, resulting in standing in that beautiful Animus loading void while it installed the last bits of singleplayer content required to start the story. Although in that case it only required a couple of extra minutes to get those modes. Unlike Madden, the full disc didn't need to be installed.
On both consoles, the game has a timer or progress meter in the main menu telling you the progress of the full install. So at least you aren't left blindly guessing when you'll be able to play. Since all of the games we were testing required an update, we factored this into our times.
